Where is Sheesh Mahal in Agra?

Sheesh Mahal is one of the several tourist attractions within the Agra Fort complex. It’s about 2.5 km from the Taj Mahal, and it’s one of the most visited tourist attractions in Agra. Make sure to explore other architectural marvels around and uncover more fascinating stories about the Mughals.

Architecture of Sheesh Mahal Agra

Sheesh Mahal architecture was created by a team of architects with red sandstone and white marble. It’s rectangular in shape, divided into two halls with a courtyard in the centre. It’s a beautiful example of how Rajasthani architecture can be infused with Islamic architecture.

The palace served as the private dressing room and bathing area of the queens. And these chambers had marble tanks with fountains and fixtures for both hot and cold water. Marble doors were built to turn the place into a steam bath.

The ceiling of the palace chambers has intricate patterns made of tiny mirrors. The walls are also covered with such mirrors. It’s said that the queen loved to look up at the stars while she slept. And the mirrorwork of the palace created the illusion for the queen to enjoy the feel.

The mirrors are said to be brought specially from Haleb, an ancient city in Syria. Apart from the mirrorwork, precious stones are also etched into the walls.

Sheesh Mahal entrance is through a magnificent gate made of red sandstone with intricate carvings. The palace exterior also has designs, along with floral motifs and Islamic calligraphy.

The palace also features several Mughal architectural elements, such as jharokha windows and domed pavilions. They not only enhance the beauty of Sheesh Mahal but also provide shade and ventilation.
