Akbar’s Tomb in Agra is an important architectural masterpiece of the Mughal era. It’s the final resting place of the emperor. Akbar selected this site for his tomb and oversaw the construction himself until his death.
A majestic gateway welcomes you to explore the impressive tomb. It’s a five-storey structure built entirely out of red sandstone and white marble. And unlike many other Mughal tombs that face Mecca, Akbar’s Tomb Agra is toward the rising sun.
This grand mausoleum stands as a symbol of Akbar’s sophisticated taste in architecture. An expansive garden surrounds the tomb building.
This serene location offers a calming space for reflection. You might also spot animals like antelopes, monkeys and peacocks on the premises. Lush green surroundings with wildlife give this tomb a unique cultural identity.
Where is Akbar’s Tomb situated?
This tomb of Akbar the Great is in the suburbs of Agra, in the Sikandra region. Although the construction of the tomb began under Akbar’s administration, his son Salim (popularly known as Jahangir) completed it after the death of the emperor. The distance of Akbar’s Tomb is 9 km from Agra city centre, on the way to Mathura.

History of Akbar’s Tomb
Akbar looked after almost the entire tomb construction during his lifespan. After his death, his son Jahangir planned and completed the construction from 1605 – 1613.
Later, during the rule of Aurangzeb, Akbar’s great-grandson, the tomb suffered significant losses. It happened during a revolt by a community of Jat people against Aurangzeb. They not only damaged the property but also looted precious jewellery kept inside the tomb. They even burned and cremated the bones of Akbar, which is an unacceptable practice in Islam.
Then, in the early 1900s, Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, carried out extensive repairs and restoration of the tomb. He also took care of restoring many other historical buildings under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act.
Architecture of Akbar’s Tomb
Akbar’s Tomb plan is like a four-tiered pyramid, topped by a marble pavilion. Its architecture is a mix of the Hindu Rajputana style and Mughal style.
The magnificent entrance, fine Persian-style calligraphy and intricate latticework all represent the Islamic influence. The chhatris (domed canopies) and tiers of airy pavilions, on the other hand, reflect a local influence.
This Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra is primarily constructed with red sandstone and white marble. And it mirrors the symmetry found in other monuments of this era. The designs are mostly geometric, but floral and calligraphic styles are also prominent.
A square platform lies at the centre of the building courtyard over which a false tomb of Akbar is constructed. The actual tomb is in the basement.
This tomb is surrounded by a Charbagh garden layout. A water canal divides this garden of Akbar’s tomb into four sections. A wall around the entire complex keeps it safe.
Akbar’s Tomb complex has four gates. The southern gate is the only usual point of entry.
Things to do at Akbar’s Tomb
1. Checking out the tomb – On the ground storey of Akbar’s Tomb monument, in the centre of the courtyard, a platform is raised. It marks the marble cenotaph of Akbar. It has designs and carvings in the Islamic style. Large latticework panels form a wall from all four sides. The actual tomb, though, is in the basement, where the body of emperor Akbar is kept as per the Mughal traditions. Unlike other Mughal tombs, it faces the east rather than Mecca.
2. Exploring the architecture – Akbar’s Tomb Sikandra is among the most impeccable of the Mughal-era buildings. It’s built like a tiered structure, and each storey has intricate pillars and kiosks. The blend of the Islamic style of architecture with the local style steals the heart of anyone who sees the building. The way to the tomb in the basement, too, is a work of art. It’s covered with paintings in gold, green and blue, along with Persian inscriptions.
3. Visiting the tomb of Jodha Bai – You can visit the tomb of Akbar and Jodha Bai together during your time in Sikandra. The tomb of Jodha Bai (or Mariam-uz-Zamani) is only about a km away from Akbar’s Tomb. Mariam-uz-Zamani’s tomb was built by Jahangir, and she’s the only wife of Akbar buried close to him.
