Diwan-i-Aam is a large hall from the Mughal era. It was built by Shah Jahan in the 1630s. And its majestic aura still leaves visitors awestruck.

It’s a magnificent, white, one-storey structure with intricate carvings that was originally built in red sandstone. It has a flat roof, and it’s divided into three sections with rows of decorated columns. The ceiling and columns had delicate work done with gold.

The hall is well-known as the place where Shah Jahan held his public meetings and listened to their grievances. Thus, Diwan-i-Aam is also referred to as the Hall of Public Audience.

At the centre of the eastern side, there is a canopy made of marble. It was where the emperor’s throne was kept. They received the general public here and heard their complaints. And a gold-plated railing separated them from the courtiers.

But Diwan-i-Aam in Agra isn’t just an architectural marvel. It’s a gateway to a rich historical heritage. It was badly damaged during British rule, but efforts have been put in to return some of its past glory. Hire a knowledgeable guide, and you’ll be able to dive into its long history.

Where is Diwan-i-Aam in Agra?

Diwan-i-Aam is one of the several attractions inside Agra Fort. It’s about 2.5 km from Taj Mahal, and it’s counted among the most visited tourist attractions in Agra. When visiting Diwan-i-Aam, you can also explore other architectural marvels inside the fort complex and uncover additional fascinating stories about Mughal rule.

Architecture of Diwan-i-Aam

The allure of Diwan-i-Aam Agra Fort lies in its extraordinary architecture. The expansive hall features several elements showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the era. It has a raised platform embellished with graceful columns, decorative arches and ornamental niches. Its roof is flat, and the ceiling is adorned with intricate floral patterns and delicate motifs.

One part of Diwan-i-Aam has a canopied chamber built of marble where the emperor sat. It was connected to the residential palaces so that ladies could visit Diwan-i-Aam without being seen. They could observe the everyday happenings from behind the lattice marble windows.

Just beside the main chamber is a marble dais. It was the seat of the wazir (one of the highest officials) who submitted petitions from the public to the emperor.

The Diwan-i-Aam in Agra Fort was the first of such structures commissioned by Shah Jahan. It acted as a prototype for the Diwan-i-Aam halls of many Mughal forts, like the ones in Lahore, Delhi and Burhanpur.
