Renowned as a Mughal emperor and celebrated for his splendid architectural creations, Shah Jahan constructed many magnificent structures, including forts, palaces, gardens, mausoleums, and exquisite mosques.
The Nagina Masjid, situated within the Agra Fort complex, is one such structure of notable beauty. The name "Nagina" translates to "gem," reflecting the mosque's precious allure.
Its serene atmosphere and the graceful blend of architectural elements offer a unique experience for those eager to delve into the rich tapestry of India's cultural heritage.
All about Nagina Masjid, Agra
Crafted from gleaming white marble, the Nagina Masjid stands close to another splendid mosque, the Moti Masjid.
Nagina Masjid is one of the three mosques inside the Agra Fort, the third being the Mina Masjid.
Commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1635 AD, the Nagina Masjid served as a place of worship exclusively for the ladies of the royal family, restricting access to anyone outside this esteemed circle.
While the Moti Masjid is relatively larger and has an intricate design, the Nagina Masjid exhibits a simpler architectural style.
The mosque features a well-spaced courtyard with a small water tank along the eastern wall for ablution (wazu) before prayer.
The prayer area is topped by three domes, with the central dome surpassing the side domes in size.
Crowned by lotus petals and kalash-finials, the three bulbous domes add an elegant touch to the mosque's aesthetics.
The domes are surrounded by flat surfaces or Chajjas, showcasing the distinctive Bangladar style of construction that gained prominence during that era.
#Trivia: On one wall of the mosque was a balcony that offered a view of the Mina Bazaar that allowed the ladies of the royal family to indulge in shopping activities.
