All about the Ram Bagh, Agra

Ram Bagh, located 8 km north of the iconic Taj Mahal, is one of India’s oldest Mughal gardens. Its origins trace back to 1526 when Emperor Babur, the first Mughal ruler, envisioned and constructed this graceful garden.

Nur Jahan, the wife of Jahangir, played a significant role in the Ram Bagh’s restoration. Ram Bagh was a temporary resting place for Babur's remains before they were shifted to Kabul.

Originally, the place was named Aram Bagh, the 'Garden of Rest'. Later, it came to be known as Ram Bagh.

Additionally referred to as Bagh-i-Gul Afshan, the garden's layout follows a pattern called charbagh, known for its symmetrical design with four parts.

As said earlier, the entire area is divided into four parts, each separated by water channels and pathways.

Water, a significant part of Islamic culture, was vital in sustaining this garden. The Persian style influences the garden's design, with distinct levels serving different purposes.

Ram Bagh primarily sources its water from the Yamuna River. This water is channelled into the park through three cascades across three levels.

The first level is dedicated to growing flowers and vegetables, while the second level houses flower beds, elegant stone terraces, and small pavilions. The third level comprises various structures, terraces, and reservoirs.

Alongside the riverbank, cool breezes, dense foliage, shady trees, flowing water in canals, and cascades create an incredibly refreshing environment, offering respite from Agra's hot climate.

The garden also boasts fountains and two pavilions, which border the water channels and create a picturesque setting enhanced by lush greenery. People believe that Jahangir waited at Ram Bagh before entering Agra after he conquered the Kangra Fort.

Big walls surround the garden, and at the corners, there are tall towers topped with fancy pavilions.

Over on the northeast side, there is a raised area with steps that take you to Hammam, which used to be a bathhouse. The rooms there are all broken now, but you can see the remains of the roof. Right next to the garden's north side, there is a line of old broken houses with gates made of red stone at each end.
