Links: Website | MapRang Mahal (or Pleasure Palace) is one of the oldest structures in Fatehpur Sikri. It was said to be the residence of the chief queen, and it had vibrant and ornate interiors once. It’s said that Akbar built it for his wife and that Prince Salim was born here.
This red sandstone palace was designed with luxury in mind. In its times, it was considered to be the best example of residential architecture in the country.
The palace had multiple chambers and courtyards. Intricate carvings and colourful mosaics adorned its walls. Its exquisite frescoes and decorative motifs were said to be used here for the first time.
But much of Rang Mahal is in ruins now. Of the five inner courtyards, only two have survived. They are on the southeast side of the building. The colours have now faded with time, but the palace hasn’t lost its elegance and vibrance.
