Diwan-e-Khas (also known as the Hall of Private Audience) is a grand hall built by Emperor Akbar to entertain his special and eminent guests. It’s the place where dignitaries, intellectuals and spiritual leaders held meetings with the emperor.

It’s a rectangular two-storey-high building with a flat roof. One of its distinguishing features is the presence of four chhatris on four corners of the roof.

Carved in red sandstone, Akbar’s Diwan-e-Khas boasts a unique blend of Islamic and Hindu architecture. It’s a fusion of the artistic elements from both architectural elements. And it offers a glimpse into the fascinating royal court.

It’s easy to lose oneself in the floral and geometric designs carved into the stone. An intricately-carved pillar occupies the central position in the main hall inside. You can still feel a distinct aura of power and authority in the hall.

Where is Diwan-e-Khas in Fatehpur Sikri?

Diwan-e-Khas is a part of the grand Fatehpur Sikri Fort. It isn’t a large structure, but it’s one of the most distinctive of the administrative buildings in the fort. It’s about 36 km from Agra. This old city has several other monuments built by the Mughals – for administrative, residential and religious purposes.

Things to do at Diwan-e-Khas Fatehpur Sikri

1. Admiring the architecture – Diwan-e-Khas, with its carvings and detailing, is a wonder to explore. Doors from all four sides lead to a single hall, and a massive column is its centrepiece. The column supports a stone throne platform. And the diagonal, railed galleries surrounding it are believed to have been for sitting ministers and nobles.

2. Taking a guided tour – A visit to Diwan-e-Khas isn’t just about appreciating the grandeur of Mughal architecture. It’s an immersive experience that takes you on a journey through the pages of history. Hire a guide to understand the historical and architectural significance of the place. They have many unheard stories and legends to share about the monument.

3. Exploring the fort complex – Fatehpur Sikri Fort is home to numerous other spectacular monuments. Among the prominent ones are Buland Darwaja, Panch Mahal and Jama Masjid. They’re some of the best examples of the Mughal legacy in India. Diwan-e-Aam, Jodha Bai’s Palace and the Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti are also worth exploring.

4. Shopping in the vicinity – The area around the fort has several shops selling souvenirs. Shopping is a great way to take a piece of the culture home with you. And the shops offer plenty of opportunities to buy traditional Indian crafts, textiles and jewellery items. Ceramic arts and attars (perfume oils) from the region also are quite popular.

Diwan-e-Khas Timings and Entry Fees

Diwan-e-Khas Fatehpur Sikri is open throughout the year. The best time to visit, though, is in winter (from November to February). The weather in the town is most suitable during those days. You can visit it anytime during the day, from sunrise to sunset.

It takes only about an hour to explore Diwan-e-Khas. However, you must keep at least 2-3 hours to explore the entire fort complex.

There’s no separate entry fee for Diwan-e-Khas. It’s part of Fatehpur Sikri, and its entry fee is ₹50 per person for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC country visitors. Other foreign visitors need to pay ₹610 for the entry ticket. Kids below 15 years get free entry.
