Links: Website | MapDiwan-e-Aam (or the Hall of Public Audience) in Fatehpur Sikri is a pavilion-like rectangular structure in front of a large open space. It used to be the designated hall where emperors used to meet the public.
It was constructed in the 1600s by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. He used to sit here and hear the petitions of the general public every morning. Diwan-e-Aam hall was also used for public prayers and celebrations. It was originally built in red sandstone, but it was later plastered with white shell paste to resemble white marble.
The architecture of Diwan-e-Aam is simple in comparison to other Mughal-era monuments in the vicinity. Still, it’s one of the must-visit monuments in Fatehpur Sikri. Its simplicity, in fact, makes it stand out.
Where is Diwan-e-Aam in Fatehpur Sikri?
Diwan-e-Aam is located inside the Fatehpur Sikri Fort complex, about 36 km from Agra. It’s the first enclosure of the palace from the entrance. This old city has several other monuments built by the Mughal rulers for administrative, residential and religious purposes.

It consisted of three parts: the front space for the public, the central space for the emperor and an adjacent space, separated by marble screens, for royal ladies to see the everyday happenings. The chamber was connected to the royal apartments so that women could visit Diwan-e-Aam without being seen by the common people.

To understand the historical and architectural significance of the place, hire a guide. Guides take you on an immersive historical journey of Diwan-e-Aam and Fatehpur Sikri.
