Samosa Mahal is one of the lesser-known tourist spots in Fatehpur Sikri. The palace got the name as it’s shaped like a triangle, resembling a samosa (an Indian snack). Records about its actual name or occupants aren’t available, though.

The palace, nevertheless, is an exemplary monument from the Mughal era. It’s a single-storey residential palace, assumed to belong to one of the nobles of Emperor Akbar.

Red and grey sandstone have been used for its construction, with ornamental arches and friezes on all facets. It has a series of rooms along with an open veranda on all sides. Samosa Mahal, being a residential construct, also has hammams and toilets with earthenware pipes.

Samosa Mahal is a part of the Fatehpur Sikri Fort complex, which is about 36 km from Agra.

Things to do at Samosa Mahal Fatehpur Sikri

1. Checking out building architecture – The design of this single-storeyed Samosa Mahal is irregular, as a part of it has been destroyed. The architecture of the remaining building is still a testament to the artistic abilities of the Mughals. The palace is adorned with ornamental arches, and beautiful pillars and brackets grace the verandas. You can also see the traces of the paintings within its interiors.

2. Visiting other nearby monuments – The palace is a part of Fatehpur Sikri Fort. And it’s close to several historical buildings in the fort complex. Among the most popular places to visit here are Buland Darwaza, Jodha Bai’s Palace and Diwan-i-Khas. Jama Masjid and Tomb of Salim Chishti are also nearby.

3. Shopping for souvenirs outside – A visit to Samosa Mahal Fatehpur Sikri also gives you an opportunity to shop for souvenirs. Marble inlays, ceramic arts and leather-made goods are common in the shops near the fort. Embroidery works and traditional jewellery are also worth checking out. Another must-buy item here is the variety of attars (perfume oils).

Samosa Mahal Timings and Entry Fees
