All about Moti Masjid, Agra
The Moti Masjid, situated within the Agra Fort, is a prime example of the architectural excellence of the Mughal era. Commissioned by Shah Jahan, it is often referred to as the Pearl Mosque due to its radiant appearance, resembling a pearl.
Situated north of the Diwan-e-Khaas complex in the Agra Fort, the Moti Masjid was built by Shah Jahan for the members of his court to offer prayers.
Constructed between 1648 and 1654, the Moti Masjid is a later addition to the Agra Fort, undertaken by Shah Jahan. Several buildings were dismantled during Shah Jahan's rule, and new structures were erected. Moti Masjid was one of those erections.
By completing the mosque's construction in 1654, the Mughal residence had shifted to Shahjahanpur, the city made by Shah Jahan, for which he was extremely proud.

Architecture of Moti Masjid, Agra
The floor of the mosque gently slopes from east to west. The mosque's outer walls are built with shining white marble and the insides with red sandstone.
The main prayer hall, adorned with intricate Persian inscriptions, has Musallahs (a carpet for Muslims to pray on) designed with black marble.
The courtyard of the mosque, surrounded by arcades, has an ablution (cleansing oneself before offering prayers) pool at its centre. There is also a sundial in one corner of the mosque's courtyard.
The main prayer area had separate portions for women of the royal family to offer their prayers. These portions had a separate entry from the main entry to the mosque.
The architectural finesse and detailed design highlight the Mughal craftsmanship at its finest.
The Mughals, especially Shah Jahan, had a soft spot for symmetry in his constructions. Shah Jahan aimed for the mosque's front facade to align with the direction of the other structures throughout Agra Fort.
However, acknowledging the Muslim practice of facing Mecca (to the west) during prayers, a clever solution was devised. The mosque was smartly designed so that, while the outer front facade followed the symmetry of the other buildings, the inner walls of the main worship area were oriented towards the west.
