Located in the heart of Agra, Jama Masjid (also known as Jami Masjid) is one of the largest mosques in India. It was built by Jahanara Begum, the eldest surviving child of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.

This fine mosque was constructed in the 17th century. It combines elements of Persian and Islamic styles, reflecting the grandeur of Mughal architecture.

Jama Masjid Agra boasts a large central dome, flanked by smaller domes, tall minarets and an expansive courtyard. It showcases detailed carvings, inscriptions and colourful tiles that highlight its majestic beauty. It was once connected to Agra Fort.

Everything about Jama Masjid in Agra, from its design to its architecture, is surreal. Its artistic perfection makes it one of the most visited tourist attractions in Agra. Not only is Jama Masjid a notable architectural marvel, but it also serves as the principal mosque of Agra.

Every Friday, special prayers are conducted at the mosque. Therefore, local people also call it the Friday Mosque. Salim Chishti’s tomb is also a part of the mosque compound.

History of Jama Masjid Agra

Jama Masjid Agra history goes back to 1643. It was commissioned by Jahanara Begum after receiving permission from Shah Jahan, the then Mughal ruler.

The construction of the mosque took six years, until 1948, and over five thousand labourers and artisans to complete. The complex was later chosen by Shah Jahan to build the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, too. Several other reconstruction projects were undertaken during those years to improve Agra.

As per the records, a spacious, octagonal Tripolia Chowk also existed between Jami Masjid and Agra Fort Delhi Gate. It was a buzzing city square and marketplace. But it was destroyed later, in the 19th century, to build Agra Fort Railway Station and lay down railway tracks.

Architecture of Jama Masjid

The Jama Masjid of Agra is a red sandstone building with intricate white marble decorations. It stands on a high platform to attract eyes from afar. A flight of 35 Agra Jama Masjid stairs takes you to the mosque building.

The prayer hall is a long rectangular structure, divided into five sections and crowned by three large domes. These domes are crowned with inverted lotus and kalash finials.

It has an open, rectangular courtyard in the front, with a fountain in its centre.

Connecting the prayer hall to the courtyard are five archways. The central archway has a large iwan portico and a white marble facade with Persian calligraphy and geometric patterns. Also, two slender minarets are on either side of this archway.

The interior walls and ceilings of this Jami Masjid are painted in blue. And on the west side, a beautiful mihrab and pulpit are built in white marble.

1. Checking out mosque architecture – Just like many Mughal palaces and tombs, Jama Masjid architecture showcases the artistic prowess of the artisans of the time. Its imposing domes, tall minarets and intricate carvings are a work of art in themselves. The blend of red sandstone and white marble in the mosque is a treat to the eyes. The Persian inscription on the central archway is in praise of Jahanara and Shah Jahan.

This Friday Prayer at Jama Masjid is a good time to observe the traditions of the Islamic culture and other local religious customs. Only Muslims are allowed during the prayers.

3. Exploring the nearby fort complex – A stone’s throw away from Jama Masjid, across Agra Fort railway station, is the majestic Agra Fort. It has several large palaces and historic halls. Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khaas and Sheesh Mahal are must visit. Agra Fort also has mosques like Moti Masjid, Mina Masjid and Nagina Masjid. Its red sandstone walls hide a myriad of stories about Mughal reigns, battles and grandeur.

4. Shopping at Jama Masjid Market – The old market (known as Kinari Bazaar) behind Jama Masjid is one of the most visited markets in Agra. It’s the perfect place to buy souvenirs, taste local delicacies and experience the everyday hustle of the city. The narrow lanes are filled with shops selling traditional crafts, jewellery and footwear. A walk past the colourful shops is a beautiful experience in itself.
